Project Visit: Whaka-Ora Pest Project (WOPP)

On January 29, at 5.30pm, Hamish Fairburn from Conservation Volunteers NZ is hosting us to learn more about their project.

The Whaka-Ora Pest Project (WOPP) started in 2023, following on from the successful Kamahi for Nature programme run by the Ōtautahi Conservation Volunteers New Zealand team.

The aim is to get the community involved in tackling animal and plant pest species in Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour. By reducing these numbers, they are helping to restore the harbour’s precious ecosystems and see native plants, birds, bugs and lizards return.

Of interest to many groups might be WOPPs operational model. In many cases they are operating on public land managed by Christchurch City Council, and often these are community reserves, around which there are many requirements, including volunteer training.

WOPP is working closely with CCC to gain access to reserves, recruit and train volunteers, and then manage the project. This is a model you really want to hear about!

Format: 45 minute presentation by Hamish Fairburn, questions, then a walk through a project area.
